In the NFL, Owens played for ten seasons. He was a member of the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders. He developed into a first-team defensive back all-American while attending the University of Miami.

He also won the North-South All-Star Game’s award for Most Valuable Defensive Player. Additionally, he won MVP honors at the Coaches All-American Game. The New York Jets selected him in the first round of the 1973 draft.
