The Emmy Award-winning, Brown has served as co-anchor for the NBC news program Weekend Today from 2003 to 2007, and hosted the series, Campbell Brown, on CNN from 2008 to 2010. She has also been an education reform and school choice activist since 2013.

She began her career in local news reporting for KSNT-TV, the NBC affiliate in Topeka, Kansas, and then for WWBT-TV, the NBC affiliate in Richmond, Virginia, and also reported for WBAL-TV in Baltimore, Maryland, and WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. Brown worked for NBC News for 11 years before leaving and devote her time into her family and expected baby.

She has worked for NBC News since 1996. She was assigned to The Pentagon and covered the war in Kosovo. She was also the White House correspondent for NBC News. Brown covered George W. Bush during the 2000 U.S. presidential election. In addition, she became the main substitute anchor for Brian Williams on NBC Nightly News.

She was named as one of five women who might replace Katie Couric when she left the Today Show in March 2006. Later on, Brown announced on 22nd July 2007, on Weekend Today, that she would be leaving NBC News after 11 years to devote time to her family and expected baby. It was confirmed by CNN that Brown would start working for CNN in February 2008, filling the spot previously held by Paula Zahn, who left the network.

Brown began reporting for CNN Election Center from February through October 2008. She renamed Campbell Brown; No Bias, No Bull in October 2008, shortly before the election to ensure a smooth transition when the election was over.

The show was filled in by Ronald Martin as guest host in April and May 2009 while Brown took maternity leave. The show was renamed again to simply Campbell Brown when she returned in June 2009. She announced that she would be leaving CNN on May 18th, 2010 after CNN released her contract.
