Britain-born architect David Adjaye is from Ghana. The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., is only one of the well-known structures he is credited with designing. For his contributions to architecture, Adjaye received a knighthood in the 2017 New Year’s Honours.

The first African and one of the youngest recipients of the 2021 Royal Gold Medal, he received it. In 2022, he received his Order of Merit membership.

The RIBA Bronze Medal Award, given for RIBA Part 1 projects, is often won by students who have only earned a bachelor’s degree, and Adjaye received it in 1993, the year he graduated from college. He was a lecturer at the Architectural Association and had previously served as a unit tutor there.

David Adjaye African American Museum

The group chose David on April 15, 2009, to be its chief architect. SmithGroup, Davis Brody Bond, and the Freelon Group will collaborate on the design of the $540 million National Museum of African American History and Culture, a Smithsonian Institution museum.

The National Mall in Washington, D.C., will be the site of its location. In his design, he uses a crown motif from Yoruba sculpture. “The cultural event of the year,” according to The New York Times, was the museum’s debut in the fall of 2016.

On the Sky Arts program The Art of Architecture in 2019, a profile of it aired. The furnishings that David created for the museum are made and sold by Knoll.

His first book, David Adjaye Houses, was published in 2005. Adjaye Works 1995-2007: Houses, Pavilions, Installations, Buildings, a book he co-wrote with Peter Allison and Thames & Hudson, was released in November 2020 and featured his early body of work.

Due to his father’s career as a diplomat, David spent a lot of time traveling throughout Africa and the Middle East as a boy. He was able to become more sensitive to cultural differences thanks to his exposure to a variety of architectural styles. He has made a point of describing how his travels have informed his design philosophies.

David Adjaye Winter Park Library

The Winter Park Library and Events Center’s design was unveiled in 2017 by David & Hunton Brady Architects in Winter Park, Florida.

On December 13, 2021, the library’s doors to the public were formally opened. It was the 2022 Jury Winner for the Architizer A+ Awards Library Category.
