Who is Duane Kuiper?
Duane Kuiper is an American sportscaster, actor, and former professional baseball player, and five-time Emmy Award-winning sportscaster. Duane played as a second baseman for the Cleveland Indians and San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Kuiper has been a television and radio broadcaster for the Giants since 1986 and is one-half of the popular “Kruk and Kuip” duo alongside his friend and former teammate Mike Krukow and has worked as a sportscast even while he was still a player. He briefly left the Giants in 1993 to work for the expansion Colorado Rockies for a year but returned in 1994.

Duane was married to Michelle Kuiper for 36 years but she later died on 20th February 2022. They were blessed with two children; Cole and Dannon. He also has two granddaughters named Andy and Kit.

After college, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox but did not sign with them. After graduating, he was drafted by the Cleaveland Indians and he accepted to sign with them and spent three seasons with the Indians. From 1972, he didn’t receive a call-up until 1974 when he received a September call-up.
He made his debut on 9th September, coming on as a defensive replacement. Duane spent his spell with The Cleaveland Indians from 1974 to 1981. In the year 1982, Kuiper moved to San Francisco Giants where he spent his spell until 1985.
While still a player, Kuiper began his broadcasting career, where he hosted his own KNBR Radio show from 1982 to 1985. After his retirement from playing baseball, Kuiper began providing commentary for the Giants from 1986 to 1992.
In 1993 there were uncertainties about whether the Giants would move to Florida and so Kuiper left and spent one year with Colorado Rockies. In 1994, he returned to broadcast for the Giants where he has been ever since.
He made a historic call for the final on 1st November 2010 which resulted in the Giant’s first title since 1954.
Besides being a television play-by-play announcer on NBC Sports Bay Area, he also shares radio play-by-play duties. In December 2010, he signed a six-year extension to continue as a Giants announcer.
In 2021, he was diagnosed with cancer which required chemotherapy and so was not among the broadcasters.
However, he returned for a limited spell, where he was called remotely from San Francisco in the 2022 season. He is noted for his distinctive calls at the start and end of games.
