James Wieland is a well-known American meteorologist and journalist who was reared in South Florida. He currently serves as the West Palm-based WPTV NewsChannel 5’s meteorology reporter. James had to get used to Clarksburg, West Virginia’s icy weather after attending Florida State University.
He had to figure out how to get his car out of the snow because he was the Chief Meteorologist at WDTV at the time. James continued from West Virginia to Macon, Georgia, where he covered a number of severe thunderstorms and even had the opportunity to follow Hurricane Floyd up the Georgia coast. James received the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval while he was in Macon.
James expanded his knowledge of the tropics after relocating to the Carolinas where he spent three years covering numerous storms. In a survey published in the neighborhood newspaper The Morning News, he was awarded “Best of the Pee Dee” runner-up. James was prepared to learn forecasting for three different stations every night once he arrived in Baltimore.
This required that we cover heat waves, tornadoes, and snowstorms all in one night! James was able to cover Hurricanes Dennis and Charlie live as they made landfall along the Florida beaches despite being a thousand miles away in his Baltimore studio.
James is now delighted to be back in South Florida, where he can enjoy the beach and a break from the cold. His Palm Beach County-based family, who are also overjoyed to be able to watch his programs live, resides there. James is a member of the Surfrider Foundation and enjoys surfing and coming to the beach in his own time.
