She was later signed to report for National Nine News on the Nine Network in 1981. She was also tasked to present the Nine News Morning News.
Hayes was later appointed as a co-host of the Australian TV program, Today in 1986 together with Steve Liebmann. She stayed as a co-host at Today until 1996 when she was replaced by Tracy Grimshaw. After her spell on Today, she joined 60 Minutes in 1996 as a correspondent, where she works today.
