The award-winning Maura began her acting career in 1995 when she was cast in the CBS soap opera As the World Turns as Carly Tenney. West played that role from April 11, 1995, to May 8th, 1996. She came back to the show to reprise her role again on September 10, 1997. She remained on the show until its television finale on September 17, 2010.
Through her efforts, she was able to garner a number of awards for the role of Carly, which include Soap Opera Digest Award nominations for Outstanding Villainess in 1996, for Outstanding Younger Lead Actress in 1999 and 2000, and for Favorite Couple in 2001, an award that she shared with costar Micheal Park.
She further received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in Drama Series, in 2001 and 2002. In August 2010, it was reported she would join the main cast of the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless to portray the third actress to play Dian Jenkins.

She later joined the ABC soap opera General Hospital in April 2013. She reported having joined the cast in the newly created role on 24th April 2013 and first hit the screen on 8th May as Ava Jerome.
The performance of Ava had already received critical acclaim, earning her a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2015, the first for her portrayal of Ava and sixth overall in the category. She further won the category on 26 April 2015. She also debuted for the first time in a feature film, Come Back to Me, 2014, which was rather an adaption of the novel The Resurrectionist.
