From 2011 until 2019, Trey Gowdy, a former politician, federal prosecutor, and television news personality, represented South Carolina’s 4th congressional district in the United States. He represented a sizable portion of South Carolina’s Upstate, including Greenville and Spartanburg.
Prior to entering politics, Gowdy worked as a federal prosecutor in the District of South Carolina from 1994 to 2000. From 2000 to 2010, he was the solicitor (district attorney) for the Seventh Judicial Circuit of South Carolina, which includes Spartanburg and Cherokee counties.
Gowdy presided over the US House Select Committee on Benghazi from 2014 to 2016, which helped lead to the discovery of Hillary Clinton’s personal email server.
His inquiry committee spent more than 2.5 years and $7.8 million looking into the circumstances surrounding the Benghazi incident in 2012, but it was unable to uncover any proof of particular wrongdoing on the part of Clinton, who was the secretary of state at the time.
During the 2016 election, Gowdy pushed for the prosecution of Hillary Clinton. He presided over the House Oversight Committee starting in June 2017.
Gowdy declared on January 31, 2018, that he will not run for re-election in 2018 and that he would instead focus on a law career. Since then, he has joined Fox News as a commentator and the law firm Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough. In 2021, he received a promotion to host Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy and Fox News Primetime, respectively.
