Yassir Lester Career

TV writer, American comedian,  and actor who broke out in early 2017 when he started astringing the Fox comedy Making History Fox, 2017. Raised primarily in Marietta, Georgia, he always knew he wanted to be a comedian. He began writing jokes at age 17 and did his first professional stand-up comedy gig when he was 19.

When did Yassir Lester start to perform?

In his 20s, he spent a number of years working as a professional comedian, touring the nation for his performances. He would compose spec scripts anytime he had free time since he yearned to be employed as a TV writer. His big break occurred when he joined the writing staff of the Adult Swim animated series Black Dynamite (Adult Swim, 2011–2015), which was his first big break in the early 2010s.

During his time on that program, Lester gained practical expertise in the daily rigors of creating TV comedy. In addition to his booming stand-up and TV writing careers, Lester had started making appearances as a panel host and judge on TV programs targeted at young Millennials by the early 2010s. Most notably, Lester participated as a judge on the MTV cuisine competition Snack Off in 2014 (MTV, 2014).

Lester continued to write spec television screenplays while performing several stand-up routines each week in an effort to get another desired staff writing position. As luck would have it, Lester’s chance arrived in 2016 when showrunner Lena Dunham hired him to work as a staff writer on Girls (HBO, 2012–17).

Lester worked on both the fifth season of the program as a staff writer and the NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show (NBC, 2015-) as a story editor. Lester received a significant break when he was given his first series regular role on TV in the early months of 2017 on the sitcom “Making History.” Early in 2017, the program had its network debut on Fox.
