Who is Alexandra Grant?
American artist Alexandra Grant was born as Alexandra Annette Grantis and currently resides in Los Angeles. She draws imagery for sculpture, painting, drawing, and video from words and conversations with writers.
In 2007, curator Alma Ruiz arranged her first solo exhibition in a museum. It took place at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles.
A list from the exhibition includes Grant’s substantial works on paper, a Ruiz essay on Grant’s work, and an essay by French writer and philosopher Hélène Cixous that served as inspiration for Grant. Grant is renowned for being a “radical collaborator,” and one of her longest interactions was with Michael Joyce, the father of hypertext fiction.
At least three series have been based on the paintings and sculptures based on Joyce’s texts (using them as scores or scripts to interpret rather than follow): the Ladder Quartet (exhibited at MOCA in 2007), the Six Portals (exhibited at Honor Fraser gallery in 2008), and Bodies (exhibited at Honor Fraser gallery in 2010).
Ode to Happiness, her first project with Keanu Reeves, was released by Gerhard Steidl. It also happens to be Reeves’ first book as a writer and one of Grant’s first artist books. In 2013, Grant and Cixous worked together to create a pair of exhibition series based on the latter author’s book The Philippines.

Written works and a collection of photographs were published by Steidl in Germany. The pictures were displayed at the Ochi Gallery in Sun Valley, Idaho, and the ACME Gallery in Los Angeles.
