His career journey began at The Roanoke Times and World-News. Thomas later moved to The Washington Post in 1987. While at The Washington Post, where he worked for ten years, he was mentored by Ben Bradlee. In 1997, he started working as a justice correspondent on television, working at CNN.
He later moved to ABC News in 2000 where he works as a journalist. During his career, Pierre has won several awards for his good work. He won the Emmy Award, The Peabody Award, and The Dupont Award in 2001, together with the ABC News team for their coverage of the 11th September 2001 events.
He also won The Emmy Award again with the ABC News team in 2009 for their coverage of the inauguration of President Obama. In 2012 Thomas was named Journalist of the Year by The National Association of Black Journalists for his achievement in accurately reporting the shooting of the United States Representative Gabby Giffords since other networks had wrongly reported that she had died.
He was also recognized for reporting news about the death of Osama bin Laden. Through his contribution to journalism and freedom of the press, he won the Radio Television Digital News Association’s John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award in 2015.
