Who is Zake Emanuel?
A senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, Zeke Emanuel is an American oncologist and bioethicist. He serves as the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy’s chair and is also the University of Pennsylvania’s Vice Provost for Global Initiatives. Prior to this, Emanuel held the position of Diane and Robert Levy University Professor at Penn.
He was once an associate professor at Harvard Medical School before joining the National Institutes of Health in 1998, and he currently holds a joint position at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Wharton School.

After earning his undergraduate degree in 1979 from Amherst College, Emanuel went on to earn his master’s degree in biochemistry from Exeter College in Oxford.
He simultaneously pursued an M.D. at Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Political Philosophy, earning both degrees in 1988 and 1989. He was a part of the first group of faculty fellows at the Harvard Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics in 1987–1988.
Emanuel finished his internal medicine residency and internship at Beth Israel Hospital. He then pursued medical and medical oncology fellowships at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and became a breast oncologist.
Numerous honors and prizes were bestowed on Emanuel, including the Toppan Dissertation Prize, the Harvard Award for the finest political science dissertation of 1988, and the Dan David Prize for his work in bioethics in 2018.

The parents of Emanuel are Marsha (Smulevitz) and Benjamin M. Emanuel. Benjamin M. Emanuel, his father, is a pediatrician from Jerusalem who formerly served in the Irgun, a Jewish paramilitary group that operated in Mandate Palestine.
As of 2010, he resided in a Chicago suburb and gave poor immigrants free medical attention while spearheading campaigns to ban lead paint owing to its harmful effects on children.
Marsha, a nurse and psychiatric social worker who was active in civil rights organizations like the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and was reared in the North Lawndale neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side, was Emanuel’s mother.
She brought her kids along to marches and protests. Emanuel reflected in a 2009 interview that “worrying about ethical questions was very much part and parcel of our daily routine” when he was a child.
